Teacher preparation programs must equip educators to meet the needs of an increasingly diverse student population, including building teachers’ understanding of trauma-informed practices and racism-based traumatic stress. Building on feedback from a pilot trauma-informed curriculum indicating that teacher candidates needed skills for better managing their own stress, trauma, and racial trauma, an equity-centered, trauma-informed teacher preparation model was developed. The model described in this conceptual article was delivered in conjunction with a teacher residency program designed to increase educator diversity in a large, urban emergent school district.
