Abstract

This qualitative longitudinal research study examines the experiences of graduate student instructors as they navigated emergency remote teaching in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. We found that participants experienced many of the symptoms of compassion fatigue, both during online instruction and in the return to in-person instruction. Our findings document how participants navigated and responded to these symptoms, both successfully and not. We provide recommendations for how institutes of higher education can support graduate student instructors and early-career faculty.
